ZULAIKA

Set in Curacao, one of the Dutch Antilles, ZULAIKA is a coming of age film about a little girl who draws on her imagination to cope with the difficulties of life. The dream world is where Zulaika finds
the strength to survive.
It is a film that shows without sentiment, avoiding the trappings of political correctness, a child coming to terms with an adult world.
The film’s humour combined with an inherent lyricism forces the
viewer to draw his or her own conclusions.
The mood of the film is essentially magical-realist, especially when we enter the dream world. Zulaika doesn’t experience life as a
burden. On the contrary, a setback is an incentive for her and her open-mindedness enables her to mould her hope for a more
prosperous future.
This film will be as much an inspiration for children as for adults.
